Laboratory Safety for Peptide Research

Introduction

Working with research peptides requires adherence to standard laboratory safety protocols. While peptides are not inherently hazardous under normal handling conditions, they are biologically active compounds that should be treated with appropriate caution.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • **Gloves:** Nitrile gloves are recommended. Change gloves after handling each sample to prevent cross-contamination.
  • **Lab coat:** A buttoned lab coat protects skin and clothing from accidental exposure.
  • **Eye protection:** Safety goggles or glasses should be worn when handling powders and solutions.
  • **Respiratory protection:** When weighing lyophilised powders, work in a fume hood or wear a particulate mask to avoid inhalation.
  • Exposure Prevention

    Dermal Exposure

    If a peptide powder or solution contacts skin, wash the area immediately with soap and water for at least 15 minutes. Remove contaminated clothing.

    Eye Exposure

    In case of eye contact, flush with copious amounts of water for at least 15 minutes using an eyewash station. Seek medical attention.

    Inhalation

    If powder is inhaled, move to fresh air. Work in a fume hood or biosafety cabinet when handling dry powders.

    Storage Safety

    Store peptides in locked, labelled containers at the recommended temperature. Keep a current inventory. Segregate peptides from other laboratory chemicals.

    Waste Disposal

    Dispose of peptide waste according to your institution's guidelines and local regulations:

  • Aqueous peptide waste: collect in designated liquid waste containers.
  • Solid waste (gloves, wipes, empty vials): place in biohazard or chemical waste containers as appropriate.
  • Do not pour peptide solutions down the drain.
  • Spill Management

    For small spills, wear PPE and collect the material using a damp absorbent wipe. Place in a sealed container for disposal. For large spills, evacuate the area and contact your institution's safety officer.
